BHCET recently celebrated an enriching Modern Foreign Languages Day, highlighting the importance of language learning and cultural appreciation among our students. The event, held at St. John’s Catholic School & Sixth Form College, featured a series of engaging activities and culminated in an awards ceremony for a unique language and history competition. Students from the Trust’s five secondary schools participated in the competition, which encouraged them to explore the rich intersection of language and history. One winner was selected from each school, showcasing the impressive talents and creativity of our students. The awards were presented by Manuel Mirás, the ex-Mayor of Oroso, Spain, whose presence added a special touch to the day’s celebrations.

The Modern Foreign Languages Day offered students a diverse array of sessions, including music and tourism workshops. Students thoroughly enjoyed the interactive and informative workshops, gaining new insights and fostering a deeper appreciation for foreign languages and cultures. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the awards ceremony. The ex-Mayor of Oroso congratulated the winners and emphasised the importance of language skills in today’s globalised world. His inspiring words resonated with the students, encouraging them to continue their language studies and explore new cultural horizons.

Sarah Marshall, Director of MFL at BHCET said “The event was very successful and hopefully the first of many Trust language events. These events strengthen relationships across our schools and with our international connections. We are very thankful to the participants and to our Galician friends for attending the event.”

Phil Robertson, Curriculum Research and Development Lead at St. John’s said “It’s wonderful to have students from across the Trust working together in collaboration, creating friendships and celebrating culture.”

The success of the Modern Foreign Languages Day underscores the Trust's commitment to providing students with enriching educational opportunities that extend beyond the traditional classroom. By fostering a love for languages and cultural understanding, BHCET aims to prepare its students for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
