Students from The English Martyrs Catholic School in Hartlepool recently returned from an inspiring and educational visit to Berlin, funded through the Turing Scheme, the UK government’s international education programme.
The trip provided students with a unique opportunity to explore Germany’s capital while developing cultural awareness, global understanding and insight into a wide range of career pathways. Over the course of the visit, students engaged with businesses, cultural landmarks and educational organisations, supporting both their personal development and future aspirations.
The visit began with a smooth journey from Manchester Airport to Berlin, where students immediately immersed themselves in the city through a guided tour. This introduction allowed them to experience Berlin’s rich history, architecture and culture while gaining valuable context for the days ahead.
Day two offered a strong focus on sustainability and history. A morning visit to Berlin Zoo gave students the chance to learn about wildlife conservation, environmental responsibility and global sustainability efforts. In the afternoon, the group visited the Berlin Wall Memorial, providing a powerful and reflective insight into Germany’s divided past and the importance of remembrance, unity and peace. The day concluded with a visit to the iconic Berlin TV Tower, where students enjoyed panoramic views across the city.

The third day of the trip focused on creativity, enterprise and teamwork. Students took part in an interactive workshop at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, developing problem-solving skills through hands-on LEGO builds. This was followed by a visit to Ritter Sport, where students enjoyed a chocolate-making workshop while learning more about manufacturing, branding and international business. The day ended with an evening visit to the Hard Rock Cafe, followed by bowling, offering time to relax and strengthen friendships.
On the final day, students reflected on the learning experiences gained throughout the week. Through visits to organisations across conservation, digital creativity, engineering, culture and tourism, students were able to explore how different industries operate and consider how these sectors connect to potential future careers. These experiences encouraged students to think beyond the classroom and develop as confident, outward-looking young people.
Before returning to the UK, the group enjoyed a river cruise along the River Spree, taking in Berlin’s landmarks one final time before travelling back to Manchester.
Throughout the visit, students acted as excellent ambassadors for The English Martyrs Catholic School, demonstrating respect, curiosity and maturity. Staff praised the group for their positive behaviour and engagement at every stage of the trip. The English Martyrs Catholic School remains committed to providing high-quality enrichment opportunities that support students’ academic learning, personal growth and future ambitions.
