Turing Scheme Visit to Geneva

An International Experience in Science, Culture and Global Citizenship

A group of enthusiastic Year 8 students from St John’s Catholic School & Sixth Form College, part of the Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust, took part in an enriching international visit to Geneva through the Turing Scheme. The experience provided a unique blend of scientific exploration, cultural discovery and global awareness, bringing classroom learning to life in remarkable ways.

Arrival in Switzerland

The visit began with a smooth journey from Newcastle to Geneva, where students were welcomed by the city’s spectacular landscape. Their first afternoon featured a relaxing boat tour on Lake Geneva, offering beautiful views and an introduction to Swiss life. An evening meal together provided time to settle in, strengthen friendships and reflect on the beginning of their adventure.

United Nations & History of Science Museum

The first full day focused on global cooperation and scientific heritage.

Students visited the United Nations headquarters, gaining insight into how countries work together to promote peace, development and international understanding. The experience helped them appreciate the scale and importance of global decision‑making.

In the afternoon, they explored the History of Science Museum, where exhibits on early scientific instruments and discoveries traced the development of scientific thought. The day concluded with an enjoyable evening of bowling and pizza.

Science, Humanity and Swiss Culture

The second full day combined cutting‑edge science, humanitarian insight and cultural appreciation.

The morning was spent at CERN, where students learned about particle physics, the work of the Large Hadron Collider and the collaborative research shaping our understanding of the universe. For many, this was a highlight of the trip.

In the afternoon, the group visited the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum. Through powerful and interactive exhibits, students explored the organisation’s humanitarian mission and reflected on themes of compassion, dignity and justice.

The day ended on a sweet note with a Swiss chocolate‑tasting experience — an unforgettable cultural treat.

Reflections and Lasting Impact

Throughout the visit, students demonstrated maturity, curiosity and enthusiasm. The aims of the Turing Scheme — fostering confidence, resilience, cultural understanding and aspiration — were evident in every activity.

Staff praised how well students represented both St John’s and the Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust, noting their kindness, positive attitude and support for one another. They returned home with new perspectives, strengthened friendships and memories that will continue to influence their learning long after the trip.
