Students from Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust schools recently embarked on an extraordinary Turing Scheme trip to Billund, Denmark. Themed around the ‘Pedagogy of Play,’ this fully funded opportunity provided 35 students with a unique educational journey exploring the profound connection between play and learning—a concept deeply embedded in Billund’s educational philosophy.

Renowned as the birthplace of LEGO, Billund offered an inspiring setting for the students. A highlight of the trip was their visit to the International School of Billund, a cutting-edge institution celebrated for its innovative approach to global learning and creativity. There, the students explored state-of-the-art classrooms designed to spark imagination and foster collaboration.

The educational experience delved into how LEGO is used as a powerful learning tool to enhance education. One student shared, “I really enjoyed seeing how LEGO was used in school and would like to see if we could use it more in our class.”

Staff members were equally inspired by the visit. One reflected, “Our children were motivated to use LEGO and plan their own LEGO competitions after learning about the pedagogical methods at Billund International School. Personally, I’ve reflected on how to incorporate these methods into my own teaching.”

A special moment of the trip was meeting the Mayor of Billund. The students engaged in meaningful discussions, shared stories, and asked insightful questions, gaining a deeper understanding of the town’s dedication to innovation, creativity, and community building.

The trip also included exciting experiences beyond the classroom. Students visited a trampoline park in Kolding and enjoyed activities at Lalandia, including ten-pin bowling and crazy golf. These moments fostered teamwork, strengthened friendships, and created memories filled with laughter and fun.

Reflecting on the experience, students expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to participate in such a transformative educational adventure. They returned home with new friendships, fresh perspectives on the role of play in learning, and lasting inspiration from Billund’s commitment to creativity and excellence.

Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust extends its sincere thanks to everyone involved in making this trip possible. We look forward to future opportunities to continue inspiring our students through meaningful global learning experiences.
