St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Barnard Castle has raised an incredible £2,323 for the charity Different Strokes in support of their much-loved teacher, Miss Izzy Herbert. Miss Herbert joined the St. Mary’s community in September 2024 as an Early Career Teacher, but just weeks into her role, she sadly suffered a stroke on October 17th. While she has made exceptional strides in her recovery, Miss Herbert is no longer able to return to the classroom. Despite this, she remains a beloved and valued member of the school family.

Inspired by her courage, resilience and unwavering spirit, pupils, staff, parents and governors wanted to do something meaningful during Lent to support Miss Herbert. In conversation with her and her family, the school decided to raise money for Different Strokes – a volunteer-led charity supporting younger stroke survivors and their loved ones. What started as a small idea quickly grew into a school-wide initiative: ‘Striding for Strokes’ – a sponsored walk around Barnard Castle involving the entire school community. Pupils and staff were joined by family members, local supporters, and even Miss Herbert and her family, who walked the final stretch from town back to school, making it a truly special moment for everyone involved.

Local business William Smith Printers generously donated banners for the event, and families supported with refreshments upon the group’s return to school. The community effort, both in participation and sponsorship, was overwhelming.

Headteacher Mrs Lesley Box shared her heartfelt thoughts: “Whilst the future for Miss Herbert now looks very different to the one she had planned, we know she will go on to do something amazing with her life. She truly is an inspirational young lady who we all admire, and we are so grateful that she continues to be part of our school community.
Never underestimate the influence you have had – and will continue to have – on the children, staff and parents at St. Mary’s, Miss Herbert. You will always remain part of our school family.”

The funds raised will go directly to helping others like Miss Herbert receive the support, guidance and resources they need in their recovery. St. Mary’s is proud to stand together in hope and compassion, showing the true strength of community and the impact one inspiring individual can have on so many lives.
