At St. John’s, enrichment is more than just a buzzword - it’s a lived experience for every student. From Year 7 to Year 13, students are encouraged to explore their interests, develop new skills, and take part in opportunities that shape their personal and academic journeys. We spoke to three students - Ada, Matthew and Lily - who shared how St. John’s has helped them grow both inside and outside the classroom.

Ada – Year 7: Finding Her Place Through Creativity and Responsibility

Starting secondary school can be daunting, but Ada’s transition from a small primary school to St. John’s has been filled with excitement and opportunity. “Every lunchtime I do something different,” she says, listing crochet and crafts club, choir, and gardening club among her favourites. Ada also takes guitar lessons and is a proud student librarian - a role she had to apply for, giving her a taste of a real job interview.

“I help keep the library clean and tidy, check books in and out, and support Miss Heads in making the library a relaxing space for everyone,” Ada explains. She also attended the St. John’s summer school before term began, which helped her make friends, meet teachers, and feel confident about starting Year 7.

Matthew – Year 10: Growing in Confidence Through Performance and Support

Matthew has been involved in every school production since Year 7, and his passion for drama has flourished at St. John’s. Now preparing for his GCSEs, he feels ready thanks to the consistent support from his teachers. “I’m definitely staying on for sixth form,” he says. “The teachers know me well and have helped me every step of the way.” Matthew is aiming for top grades and values the additional help and interventions available to students.

Lily – Year 13: Leading, Exploring and Giving Back

Lily’s journey at St. John’s has been nothing short of extraordinary. After a fantastic secondary experience, she chose to stay for sixth form - and it’s a decision she doesn’t regret. One of her most memorable experiences was travelling to Peru with Project Peru, where she helped build a school in a disadvantaged community. “It was eye-opening and something I’ll cherish forever,” she says.

Lily has also completed her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, taking part in challenging expeditions, and served as a CAFOD Young Leader, helping raise over £1,000 for charity. “The staff at St John’s make all these opportunities possible,” she says. “They’ve given me the best start for my future.”
