St John the Evangelist Catholic Primary School in Billingham is celebrating a highly positive Ofsted report, marking a significant milestone in the school’s ongoing journey of improvement. As a small and close‑knit school that has worked tirelessly to provide the very best for its pupils, the outcome has been welcomed with pride across the community.
Inspectors recognised the substantial progress made by the school, which achieved the expected standard in six key areas. The report praises leaders, teachers, and pupils for their collective commitment to creating a supportive, ambitious, and nurturing learning environment.
Ofsted highlighted the school’s strong focus on pupil attendance. Leaders place great importance on ensuring children attend regularly, and staff work closely with families to overcome barriers and communicate expectations clearly. A well-thought-out approach to tracking and analysing attendance supports this work and has been key in driving improvement.
The report also reflects the positive attitudes pupils demonstrate in lessons. Inspectors noted that children take pride in their work and are motivated to succeed, supported by a culture of praise and warm, nurturing relationships between staff and pupils. The school’s curriculum was praised for being ambitious, broad, and reflective of the needs of its community. High expectations for all pupils are clearly embedded throughout.
The newly formed leadership team received particular recognition for their clear vision and well-considered approach to driving the school forward. Their shared ambition and commitment to continuous improvement were evident throughout the inspection.
Promoting positive mental health was identified as a significant strength of the school. Pupils told inspectors they feel safe, listened to, and valued. Relationships across the school are respectful and caring, helping to create an inclusive environment where children enjoy spending time with their friends and taking part in activities together.
As a proud member of the Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust (BHCET), St John the Evangelist’s success has also been warmly welcomed across the wider Trust community. BHCET celebrates this achievement as a reflection of the school’s dedication and the shared commitment across the Trust to delivering high‑quality Catholic education rooted in care, ambition, and opportunity for every child.
Headteacher Mrs Linzi Nelson said:
“We are incredibly proud of this report and of our whole school community. Our children, staff, families and governors have worked so hard, and it is wonderful to see that reflected in this outcome. St John’s is a small school with a big heart, and this recognition is a testament to the dedication, warmth and ambition that drives everything we do for our pupils.”
St John the Evangelist Catholic Primary School looks forward to building on the strengths celebrated in its Ofsted report and continuing its mission to ensure every child is supported to learn, grow, and thrive. Read the full report here.
