Two primary schools from our Trust, St Charles Catholic Primary School in Spennymoor and St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Newton Aycliffe, set off together last week for a memorable residential visit to Derwent Hill in the Lake District near Keswick. The pupils shared a coach journey and quickly joined together as one family, ready for a few days of adventure and learning in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
From the moment they arrived, the children were encouraged to take part in activities that were exciting, challenging, and designed to bring out the very best in them. Highlights of the trip included canoeing on Derwent Water, hill walking, ghyll scrambling, low ropes, big swing and exploring the remarkable natural surroundings of the national park.

Derwent Hill is known for offering residential outdoor education courses that help young people prepare for the challenges of school, work, and life. Through real adventurous activities set among lakes, mountains, and woodland, pupils have the chance to grow in confidence, develop resilience, strengthen their social skills, and learn how to work well as part of a team. The centre carefully balances challenge and support so that every child can take something meaningful away from the experience.
Teachers who accompanied the visit commented on how pupils from both schools mixed easily and supported one another throughout the week. Whether they were paddling across the water or climbing up steep paths, the children showed great encouragement, determination, and kindness. Many achieved things they never thought they could do, and each success was met with cheers and proud smiles from their new friends.
For some pupils, this was their first time away from home, and for many it was their first chance to experience such dramatic scenery. As the week went on, their confidence grew, and by the final day children who had arrived feeling a little unsure were taking on new challenges with real enthusiasm.
When they returned home, tired but happy, the pupils brought back more than muddy boots and good memories. They returned with a stronger sense of themselves, a set of new skills, and a reservoir of experiences that will support them in the classroom and in life. Their time at Derwent Hill gave them opportunities to explore, reflect, and discover what they can achieve when they work together.
It was a journey they will remember for a very long time.
