Reading

Year 8 foundational reading expectations

Phonics

  • Applies phonics to read increasingly complex words in order to read longer texts fluently.

Fluency & Decoding

  • Fluent, confident reading of complex and unfamiliar texts.
  • Sustains focus on longer texts and across subject-specific texts.

Comprehension & Inference

  • Understands and can summarise a range of complex and unfamiliar texts.
  • Look beyond literal meaning and can articulate implicit information, bias and viewpoints.
  • Understands and can explain a writer’s perspective on abstract theories and conceptual ideas.
  • Synthesise information from different parts of a text or different sources / texts.

Reading for Purpose & Audience

  • Identify different purposes and audiences and evaluate their effectiveness. Can explain and analyse the key features of different texts adapted for different audiences.
  • Independently select and deploy a range of reading strategies during a task.

Disciplinary Reading

  • Selects and applies a range of appropriate reading strategies independently to help increase knowledge and understanding.

Reading for Pleasure

  • Reads widely, confidently and independently, including a range of text types and genres.

Writing

Year 8 foundational writing expectations

Purpose & Audience

  • Considers reader response through choices made in writing.
  • Writes with the intention of engaging and impacting range of audiences for a range of purposes.
  • Appropriate use of tone and formality for different purposes and audiences.

Grammar

  • Uses varied sentence openings.
  • Whole range of sentence types chosen to suit purpose and audience and used accurately.

Punctuation

  • Chooses the correct punctuation for effect.
  • Accurate use of semi-colons and colons.

Spelling

  • Accurate spelling of more complex and ambitious vocabulary. Where mistakes are made, students are able to amend these in future work.
  • Confident use of Tier 2 / 3 vocabulary that is accurately spelled and applied in written and oracy work.

Editing & Redrafting

  • Students can edit / proofread key Tier 2 / 3 words accurately and correct common vocabulary.
  • Students can edit / proofread for the whole range of punctuation, grammar and cohesive devices to amend their own work and that of others.
  • Writing is redrafted for clarity, structure and vocabulary.

Handwriting & Presentation

  • Students independently choose the right materials and tools used for the task on every occasion e.g. pencil to draw graphs, pen to write extended answers.
  • Expression of ideas is not hindered by handwriting and presentation.

Communication, Oracy & Vocabulary

Year 8 foundational communication and spoken-language expectations

Vocabulary

  • Increasing use of Tier 2 vocabulary (e.g. analyse, compare); accurate use of Tier 3 vocabulary which is used in the right context.
  • Begins to use new vocabulary independently in structured talk.
  • Select and sustain appropriate formality with growing control.

Linguistic

  • Adjusts tone / register in familiar contexts.
  • Expands sentence structures (because, however, therefore); developing clarity and detail.

Cognitive

  • Builds on others’ ideas; makes connections.
  • Builds logical reasoning; links ideas; begins to justify with evidence.

Social & Emotional

  • Expresses disagreement respectfully using scaffolds.
  • Participates consistently; acknowledges others.
  • Interprets, builds on and questions others’ ideas.
  • Confidence is increasing with students engaging in longer speaking activities and debates.

Physical

  • Reduced reliance on notes; growing fluency.
  • More consistent clarity and pace; emerging confidence.

Maths & Numeracy

Year 8 foundational maths and numeracy expectations

Number

  • Understand fractions and develop fluency with the four operations with fractions.

Algebra

  • Re-arrange formulae.
  • Solve equations, using inverse operations.

Statistics

  • Use averages and measures of spread to analyse and interpret data.

Proportion & Rates of Change

  • Learn how to scale up and scale down using multiplicative relationships.

Geometry

  • Understand and apply angle facts.

Numerical Communication

  • Present accurate, ordered working out.

Calculator Skills

  • Successfully use a calculator, knowing how to check answers are reasonable.
