Fluency & Decoding
- Reads complex and extended texts fluently, with accuracy and appropriate expression.
- Sustains focus across challenging texts, including those with complex syntax.
- Adjusts pace and expression to reflect meaning, tone, and purpose.
Comprehension & Inference
- Makes perceptive and developed inferences, supported by precise textual evidence.
- Analyses implicit meaning, including bias, ambiguity, and multiple interpretations.

- Makes sophisticated choices to shape reader response (e.g. tension, persuasion, empathy).
- Sustains awareness of audience across extended pieces of writing.
Grammar
- Manipulates a full range of sentence structures (simple, compound, complex) for deliberate effect.
- Uses varied and controlled sentence openings to shape meaning and emphasis.
- Controls syntax deliberately (e.g. subordination, fronting, omission) to influence pace and clarity.
- Maintains consistent grammatical accuracy in extended writing.
Punctuation
- Uses the full range of punctuation accurately and deliberately for effect.
